Dele Farotimi, a human rights activist, has thanked Nigerians for supporting him during his time in detention. Nigerians stood by him, ignoring differences in tribe and religion.
Farotimi was accused of defaming Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The Ekiti State Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti ordered him to be detained for 21 days.
After spending over three weeks in detention, Farotimi was released on December 24, 2024. He met the court’s strict bail conditions, including a N30 million bond, two sureties, surrendering his passport, and agreeing not to speak to the media.
After his release, Farotimi shared an emotional message, thanking Nigerians for standing with him. He said:
"Nigerians overlooked my tribe and religion and spoke for me. Because of your support, I was not silenced. Together, we showed the power of unity."
Farotimi’s case reminds Nigerians of the importance of standing together to fight injustice. It shows that unity is key to overcoming challenges and ensuring freedom for all.
